“I’m now on a road of recovery I would never have thought possible.” Such are the words of one patient who addressed her illness with Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). “Thank you for answering my prayers,” are the grateful words of another. What is EFT, and how can it help people with various cancers from mesothelioma to breast cancer, and even into other illnesses like diabetes?
What Is Emotional Freedom Technique?

EFT is a form of energy healing based on the ancient Chinese meridian system. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) defines energy healing as one of several complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices. A growing number of cancer patients today use EFT in their cancer care programs, usually combined with intuitive bodywork and other holistic therapies.

Some people refer to EFT tapping as “emotional psychology,” or “psychological acupuncture” without the needles. Used to relieve emotional stress as well as physical pain, EFT aims to restore energy balance to encourage natural healing abilities. Modern cancer care and post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) programs are beginning to recognize the health benefits of EFT, which to date has received little scientific attention.

How Can It Benefit Cancer Patients?

While the scientific evidence is slim, personal and anecdotal proof is abundant. EFT tapping is beneficial therapy for cancer patients and survivors. The practice involves straightforward, easy-to-learn techniques that people with cancer can use themselves to assist the healing process.

EFT reduces anxiety, fear, and stress at all levels: physical, mental, and emotional. The therapy also addresses spiritual health. By moving the body from a fight-or-flight stance to a position of harmony and balance, EFT encourages cancer healing and overall well-being.

Done alone or with a practitioner, cancer patients who undergo EFT therapy experience significant relief from traditional treatment side effects. The simple tapping techniques greatly reduce fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and headaches. They also improve the appetite and sleep to promote health and rest.

What About Patients With Terminal Cancer?

According to EFT therapists and patients with firsthand experience, Emotional Freedom Technique offers powerful possibilities that go beyond addressing physical pain and stress. EFT works with the mind, spirit, and emotions. It increases a sense of self-worth and self-control, both of which are enormously important for cancer patients.

Moreover, it helps patients reach an inner calm and peace that is necessary for acceptance and healing. Even someone with metastatic cancer, a bleak pancreatic prognosis, or even an unexpected life expectancy can benefit from EFT therapy. It can help them accept themselves, their cancer, and their outcome to make living through cancer a little easier.
